Some fun quotes

Over the Memorial Day weekend, I had my family over for a BBQ.  All my aunts and uncles were able to see my shop and jewelry for the first time.  We are all pretty creative people, so we were able to throw around some great ideas as far as jewelry design, shop setup and marketing, which is always fun to do.  My mom saw a quote I had up in my bedroom, which was "MADNESS IS GENIUS."  That is where she said, you should put this up on your site.  Quotes are fun to have around...they give some perspective, they are relate able, they are fun, and are always great for inspiration, so I have incorporated a few into my site here.

Here are the quotes that I liked for Mad Dream Design:

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be
absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”
- Marilyn Monroe

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."
- Lewis Carroll

The craziest ideas can be the best, the biggest leap of faith can be the most successful, dreams can become reality, the biggest risks can find the best results, and it's the people you find along the way that make the journey worth while.  What is your mad dream?

Texture

I love texture and it being one of the elements of art, it is kind of a big deal  It is my favorite to explore and seek out inspiration for my next project.

Inspiration can be found anywhere and visual, as well as physical, textures are always so appealing to the eye as well as your touch.  I like things you can pick up, feel and get a closer look at.  That is one thing I enjoy most about jewelry.  It is a piece of art you can pick up, feel, and better yet...wear!

I try to recreate certain textures that may be found on something soft with the metal medium of my jewelry.  It creates a nice juxtaposition.  I also try to create more of a visual texture in my work that translates into something you may never be able to feel.  For example, rough water, it looks rough with the wind sweeping through it, but when you actually touch it, it is still as smooth as flat water.  I find these concepts most interesting.

Here is some inspiration.
Enjoy!

Race season has begun!

As some of you know, I paddle outrigger canoe year round.  This is my 11th season paddling 6 man and it is still just as fun as ever!  I started paddling as a sophomore in high school on the NAC Jr. team, quit soccer and never looked back!  I now paddle for the NAC women's team and it is still a total blast! There may be no boys at practice, or no one coaching me like my high school coach did,  but now I have a tight group of girls, and a much more mellow and fun outlook on paddling.  My competitive nature still finds its way out at all the races, but for the most part this is all for fun.  There is a time and place for everything and at this time in my life paddling career, it has become an extra thing I get to do for fun and to stay in shape, so I am just grateful to have it in my life.
Thank you Kel Thompson for the great race day photos!
We arrived in San Diego, Mission Bay, bright and early Saturday morning for the first Ironman of 2012, which makes it a very exciting, yet long day for all paddlers a like.  Ironman races are long distance races that take place mostly in the ocean and range from 10 - 18 miles.  We didn't really have any expectations for this race other than we wanted to place in the top 10 and have fun.  Let me just say, even with a more laid back approach this year, our boat rocked the first race of the season!!! I am super proud of my girls and the team I paddle with.  We were able to meet both goals this race!  We were the 10th women's boat across the line, with only 1 coed boat in front of us and we were 4th in our division.  What a great way to kick off the season!!!

To sugar coat our race, our top men's boat, in which Jimi steers, came in third overall in the men's race!

Here is to the 2012 6 man season! It is going to be a blast!

Happy 200,000 miles!

So my Toyota 4Runner ran over 200,000 miles last week.

She is a '96 and in great condition, we take her everywhere and she has been so good to us so far.

Jimi told me about a commercial Toyota used to do and I think they should bring it back, because I think it is perfectly befitting of a Toyota.  He said the commercial consisted of the mileage reader going over 100,000 miles, and the driver getting so excited they would need to pull over on the highway, get out and jump for joy.  I thought it would be fun to do that for my girl when she rolled over 200,000 miles.  Take a look.  I missed it by 21 miles, as you can see, I was a bit bummed by this, but it is still good, none the less.

Happy 200,00 miles to my 4Runner!

Joshua Tree

We went back country camping in Joshua Tree National Park over the weekend.  This was my first time to Joshua Tree and it was an awesome trip.  We drove on one of the 4 wheel drive roads for about 30 minutes to come to the Pleasant Valley registration board.  We parked my car here, put on our packs and set off for an overnight camp in Pleasant Valley.  We stuck to the bottom of the Hexie Mountains to keep track of our path.  We were the only people for miles (pretty sure we were the only ones in the valley), which was awesome and creepy all at the same time.  We hiked in about 3 miles and set up camp around 2pm in the afternoon in a clearing at the foot of a cove the mountains made to protect ourselves from the wind.  It was blazing hot by this time, so all we wanted to do was sit still and drink water.  Thankfully, it cooled down considerable once the sun started to set.  As the sun was setting, the full moon was also rising, the sky was clear and lit up on both the east and west from the sun and the moon.  I think that made the trip right there. The only animals we got to see were some lizards and desert like quails, we were hoping for a tortoise or two but no such luck.  We woke up early the next morning and hiked out while it was still cool.  Got back into town just in time to get a late breakfast, after stopping at Jumbo Rocks (a huge rock pile) to check out some more views.  The rock piles are the coolest part of Joshua tree, I think, they are just amazing.  If you ever have the chance to check them out, take it.  The park entrance fee is only $15 per car and it lasts for 7 days.  Totally worth it!  Here are a few pictures and some video from our trip...Enjoy!

Shop Progress

I am going to have my whole jewelry shop set up in my garage by this weekend, sans anvil and metal shear, but I have to say that is pretty close to done. There is always room for improvement and those are at the top of the list.

I am so excited to be able to go out to my garage and just make stuff whenever I want!  I will post pictures soon once it is all set up!  I am also in the process of picking the name for my design company and getting business cards printed.

Here is a little preview of me at work and the earrings I am about to finish for a fundraiser that is coming up May 12th.

Enjoy!
