Central California Roadtrip

One of the best parts of California, in my opinion, is PCH. Pacific Coast Hwy, or CA-1 runs along most of the coastline in California and is home to some of the best views in California.  The section of PCH we ventured through this trip was from the Monterey Bay area all the way to Gaviota State Park area, so most of the central coast. I have not done that drive in awhile, since I was a kid, so it was almost like seeing it for the first time, from a different perspective (the front seat, rather than the back seat ;) ) and with new eyes.  I got to say it is a must drive sometime in your lifetime kinda deal, especially if you are a Californian and you love the ocean which = a lot of us!
Friday
Monterey!
We got up early and packed up the car, to depart by 5:30 am, to jump on the 5 Fwy and head toward the Ranch House. When we arrived at the Ranch House Coffee Shop in Gorman, ready to eat, we were surprised with snow on the ground! The smell was horrible on the 5, so we hopped over to the 101 to complete our trip to Monterey.

Jimi has family in Monterey so we spent most of the afternoon exploring the bay, walking downtown and spending time with them.  For happy hour and dinner we went over to the Cannery Row Brewing Co. for the San Diego Beer Invasion.  It was pretty cool, even though I do not drink beer.  They had all the big SD big hitters when it comes to beer on tap. The Cannery Row Brewing Company is this old brink building with tons of character, good vibes and friendly people.

Saturday
Big Sur!
We had a slow start..breakfast, play with the kids, packing up, grocery shopping and just taking our sweet time..the weather was so amazing that weekend that it was just nice to be outside enjoying no matter what were doing.

Around lunch time we hoped on the one and drove down to Nepenthe.  Nepenthe, Big Sur has one of the best view in the house, a cool tree house like restaurant, a fun store and little cafe all set up into this cliff looking over the water on the central coast of California...doesn't really get better than that.  The food is good, the vibe is hip and the nice weather and view made it a really popular spot that afternoon.

After lunch, we made our way to Pfeiffer Big Sur Campground and stacked our clam in the shadows of the some large redwood trees that climbed up this hill and opened into a nice grassy meadow across the way from our camp.  It was quite a bit cooler in the shade, since the tress were so dense back in where we were, but the weather was so nice that it didn't matter much.

The rest of Saturday was spent walking around, exploring the river, building a fire, cooking up lots of food, eating lots of food, campfire conversations, s'mores (of course!) a lot of laughs and good times.

Sunday
Pacific Coast Hwy!

My Favorite!
After packing up and saying our goodbyes to everyone, Jimi and I were headed down to Pfeiffer Big Sur Beach which is 2 miles from the highway on this little one lane road. It was a beautiful drive into the park where you land yourself in on of the most gorgeous beaches! Tons of sand to walk on...a pebble stream running through the center out into the ocean, and gorgeous rock formations getting slammed by the crashing surf. We ate lunch here and Ozzie was having a blast finally being at the beach (his favorite place)! The sun was so nice warming us through. Then we got back on the road and had a major stretch of driving to do until we made it to our next stop.

This drive was (plus the drive from Monterey to Big Sur on Saturday) was just insane. There are no words to describe the beauty that is the central coast. large rock formations, large, expansive cliffs overlooking dark crashing waves with the sun shinning and clear air.  I have so many pictures from the drive, I cannot share them all but these are the best of the bunch.

We finally made our way to Jalama Beach from CA-1 on a beautiful county road with rolling green hills and nothing for miles but green, lush land.  It looked like we should be in the English countryside, rather than central California! Soon the road opens up to the ocean and this long stretch of beach with a little campground that was hopping because of the long weekend. In the park they also have a store and grill home of the famous Jalama Burger.  It is huge and delicious. I can see Jalama being the perfect place for a beach and camp kinda weekend.
We made it to the end of PCH (that part of it anyway) where it hits the 101 at Gaviota State Park right at sunset.  Perfect way to the end weekend. You can always follow along with our weekend adventures on Instagram @maddiedierkes.

Enjoy!

Bury and Grow // 2013 Word of the Year

My friend and fellow paddler, Jen Todd, created a fun little yearly activity called the Bury and Grow Hike.  It comes up every January where we head out to El Moro for a hike.  At some point in the hike we stop and dig a hole and add to the hole a leaf with something we want to let go of (or bury) and something that we want to make better (or grow) written on it.

El Moro View
It can be hard to face somethings and really easy to face others, but it sets you up on the right track for the new year.  And you are surrounded by some of your closest friends that will help and support you no matter what.

The Group!
This year I didn't actually put anything in the hole, but during the hike amongst all the catching up and socializing I thought a few things to myself.  There are a few things I let go of in 2012 and there is A LOT I am excited to grow!  Since I am "burying" the things I am letting go of I wont be talking about them here, but I will let you in on what I want to grow!

Grow

1. My relationship with Jimi. Words really cant express how I feel about this person and it is hard to imagine that things will ever be bad or my feelings even deeper.  This year...the year of our engagement is going to amazing and I am so looking forward to preparing ourselves to take the next step together and learning more about each other. Thank you babe for the first 7 years together, year 8 will be one for the books.

2. My jewelry. All right I know, everyone can't wait to see what I got in store. And I got some stuff in store for you this year! 2013 is the year I get my jewelry up on Etsy and I am tackling inventory! I have spent the last year building up my internet presence and have finally made a good base to get my store online with a full shop in the garage. Thank you everyone for the support...2013 will bring rewards!

3. Myself.  I have spent about 6 months doing some good old reading...blogs, books, devotionals and websites, on things I want to grow about myself.  Well now in 2013, I plan to actually act on everything I have read and make everything I do including my blog, my wardrobe and my writing be 100% authentically me.  That is hard to do...knowing yourself, figuring yourself out. I have not done it in 6 months...I will not have done it by the end of this year, because it is a journey.  But step-by-step I am taking each part of my life and evaluating it...is this me? And when it is not, I am changing it.  I can tell a difference already and am so looking forward to continuing to grow in 2013.

Me and my cousin, Danielle
Putting these things down on paper also helps me realize what I want for 2013 and the one word that sums it all up.  My word for 2013 is...

This word came up in a discussion with a friend the other day and I was like...oh yes, I love that word! This is something I want to strive for daily! In my relationships, my art, my blog, my wardrobe, my life and in myself...I want to find authenticity.  This is a word that I would love to find describes me....in everything I do.

What do you want to grow this year? What do you choose to forget? What is that one word that really speaks to you for 2013?  Leave in comments below if you would like to share, because I would love to hear what everyone else is thinking of for 2013.

Enjoy!

Wedding // Inspiration

So Jimi and I have booked our venue and have set a date for our 2014 winter wedding! Now that I the venue and the season I have started to look at ideas for engagement photos, colors, attire and stationary.

I really like using Pinterest for this as I can get an overall feel for what it is I want.  Here are a few of my boards I am using for wedding inspirations.

Wedding Ideas - ideas I think are funny for any wedding, not specific to my wedding exactly, although I will probably pull a few things from this board for my own wedding!

Engagement/Wedding Photos - these are all ideas that I think are fun with photography! I look at these photos as inspiration for any couple's photo shoot, photos you like of a wedding could be translated to your engagement or one year anniversary.  I am looking at over all feeling and LOVE!

Here are a few snapshots and if you are in the mood for a little wedding fun check out my Pinterest!

Apart from my Pinterest my favorite wedding site...hands down...is Ruffled! You should really check it out they have amazing shoots, vendor lists and newsletters!

Enjoy!

Channeling My Muses

I have been working with the amazing Nicole Longstreath of The Wardrobe Code on my wardrobe for the past few weeks now and I have already found some amazing results.  I can tell this is just the beginning of a very fun and successful process! I highly recommend her!!

I first heard Nicole speak at Craftcation last year and have been following her ever since.  I love that she supports thrifting, being yourself, accepting your body type and not getting caught up on what is trending at this very moment.  She is the perfect mentor for younger girls looking to tighten up their wardrobe/style, the artist who wants to be professional, yet creative with her wardrobe, and women of any age looking to revamp their wardrobe.  She is realistic and fun...this is not TLC's What Not To Wear (although I do love that show), where you have to get rid of your whole closet and start over (Thank goodness!).

My homework for this week was to make a "My Style Muses" board on Pinterest.  I was really excited about this little piece of homework because 1) I got to use Pinterest, 2) I got to have fun finding my Style Muses, and 3) it really helped me see what I am looking to channel in my own wardrobe.

You can check out Nicole's Muse board on Pinterest and this post on her blog explains how to choose style muses and what to do once you have.

I may have gotten a little carried away but, you can check out My Style Muses board here. For now here are a few of my favorites from the list...

My Blogger Style Crush
Casey Wiegand

Photos property of Casey Wiegand

Casey Wiegand blogs at The Wiegands and creates at A Little Artsy, she is truly inspiring and has amazing style to boot! She is one of my favorite bloggers to follow.

My Celebrity Style Crush
Kirsten Dunst

First of all I love her name (Kirsten was my first American Girl doll as a little girl).  Second of all, I have loved her ever since seeing her in Little Women (a favorite holiday movie in our household) when I was a little girl. I love her style in almost every one of her movies and her very own casual style!

Enjoy finding your style muse!
