What's New?

Lots of crazy fun things happening over here, so stick with me!

First, just a little over a month ago I married my best friend! It was rad, and I am seriously in dreamland - as in I can't believe it is over, and that it went by so fast! Everyone tells you that...but holy cow it went so fast. I was seriously depressed once the magical weekend was over. I mean, it was just a little over a year of planning and it was all over in a matter of hours...
But it was pure bliss.

Here is a little sneak peek of some photos taken by some of my beloved friends...pro shots coming soon (but these are pretty awesome to start with).

Birthday Throwback Thursday!

It is Thursday, so it is traditionally time for a throwback photo on Instagram!

But today is also my birthday, so this throwback will be extra special.

Here are a few of me on past birthdays to celebrate turning another year older.

Little Maddie with Night Night

2008

Last year's birthday paddle!

A few fun birthday facts...

I love birthdays, but am horrible at remembering them (even my own). I will remember all the way up till the day before and then poof it goes out of my head the whole day of.

But more importantly I love to share my birthday! I share it with someone at work...same day, same year...just hours apart on different coasts! It is kinda cool. I also end up sharing my birthday with a good friend, Bruce, who's birthday lands on the day after mine. We like joint celebrations like our El Matador dinner last night...thanks to everyone who came!!!

Celebrity Birthdays: I have the same birthday as Ben Afflek, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Child and Princess Anne.

I get to go to Hawaii for my birthday...I think that is pretty awesome...I may not come home.

Aloha!

5 Little Things

This is a fun one.

I was tagged by Emily of CoupleJones on Tuesday, where you write 5 things about yourself. If you have not been over to CoupleJones you should check out her Encourage to Inspire Project with CailaMade...it is going to be a great series on inspiration and creating!

So I got tagged, and now I am going to play!

5 things you may not know about me.

1. I love history. I always have been a bit obsessed with different eras and the pasts of different cultures. I really enjoyed my two high school history classes, and the teacher I had for those classes was really very good. At Cal State Long Beach, I found myself another great history teacher...this was not world history...this was art history. I was hooked. So I have a BA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Art History.

2. I have a huge obsession with bunnies and elephants. Bunnies - I think they are too cute for this world. I go around yelling "BUN BUNS!" when I see one...just ask Jimi. He does a great impression of me, because I am a dork. Elephants - they are such loving, gentle giants. A lot of my art is inspired by them and our house has quite a few elephant things in it.

3. Rootbeer fanatic - Barq's rootbeer is my favorite. But I also like handcrafted rootbeer and the classic A&W (rootbeer float...yes, please). If I could only have one sweet thing for the rest of my life - RB would be it...hands down.

4. I have wanted an Etsy shop since 2007 when I discovered Etsy...yes I remember the year, it was kind of a big deal for me. Everyone got Etsy gifts for Christmas that year. Now in 2013, a mere 5 and half years later, I am finally going to open my own shop. Why did I wait so long? I don't know. End of March people, it is happening here!

5. I paddle outrigger canoe...Hawaiian style boats surfing down waves...that kind of paddling. Through paddling I met my fiance, Jimi, who I have had a huge crush on for like ever. Yes, I still have a huge crush on him...duh! I feel so blessed that we get to share our love for the ocean, the waves and the sport with one another.

Okay that is enough about me. Now I tag Kelly, Noni, Lish, Kat and MJ. Kelly, because I know you will love this :) and Noni, Lish, Kat and MJ, because I would love to know a little bit more about my Falling for Friday friends!

xo,

Our Story

I am so excited that this story is my first post of 2013!

For those of you who don't know the story, kind of know the story, or love the story...
 here is our love story.

Maddie + Jimi

Part 1
To start, I must tell you, I fell for Jimi pretty much from day one.  I met Jimi in April of 2002 when I came down to the NAC to try out outrigger paddling for the first time.  That day I was put into a 12 person canoe with 11 other girls and one floppy haired 14 year old boy.  At that point I was just one of this crazy group of soccer playing girls who came down to paddle so they didn't have to do track.  It wasn't till summer hit and the school year ended that our group came down to a size that had potential to become really close over the summer.  By that point I already had a crush on Jimi, and we all became fast friends, but we were just at the beginning of this seemingly epic friendship.  I still find myself thinking about our story and am in awe of how lucky I am to have found him.

Part 2
Then, fast forward to 2005. Jimi and I were really good friends, I still had a huge crush on him, even though there were others boys that had come and gone, he was still my favorite.  It always seemed that when one of us was more interested than normal, the other was in a relationship or just getting out of one.  It never really seemed like the right time until we were on a paddling trip in Hawaii at the end of September.  I had honestly given up a lot of hope that it would ever work out in my favor, but low and behold he asked me to dinner way high up in the sky on our plane ride home from Oahu.  I was not sitting by any of my friends...just sitting in my seat freaking out, not being able to stop smiling!  The old ladies next to me probably thought I was crazy, watching Ice Princess. We went to dinner two nights later to Islands and it just felt so right from the very beginning that the rest is history.

Part 3
Now, this part I think needs some back story.  About 4 months after Jimi and I started dating...at 19 years old we decided to take a surf trip to Northern Baja Mexico.  That may seem very soon or too young to just go on a trip to a foreign country, especially one with the history Mexico has, with someone you had only been with for 4 months in his off road truck, but like I said everything felt so right that no one even thought of that until way after the fact (not even my parents).  This trip was truly an adventure and one that we promised each other that we would one day do again.

Shipwrecks, Baja California, January 2006
Now that you know that, almost exactly 7 years later in December of 2012 we finally redid this trip.  There were about 7 surf spots we had been to over the years, but there are about three that really hold dear to us.  Let me be clear we actually have never surfed at any of these spots, but the scenery is what makes it so special.  The first night we stayed at El Pabellon, an endless beach full of dunes, where you will find a very clean and quiet campground.  We were really the only ones there.  On our way back up the coast we stopped at another favorite spot called Shipwrecks (or Freighters) in Punta San Jacinto.  Here you find a huge shipwreck on the shore with a little seaside fishing town.  We took a favorite photo here 7 years ago so I, of course, asked if we could recreate it.  As I turn to get into position Jimi, with a gorgeous engagement ring in his hand says, "How about this time you wear this?" I was a bit shocked, because when it comes to Jimi, he always reels me in right when I think it isn't happening.  I had hoped it would be this trip, but had my doubts and didn't want to get attached to one idea.  So after a second, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him...I said of course and we hugged, kissed, laughed and couldn't stop smiling.  Questions, celebratory Rum and Cokes, and pictures is what followed.  By now it was late afternoon, and we were hoping to be farther up the coast at this point, but were not too bummed, because that meant we got to stay the night and celebrate in probably our favorite spot...Cuatro Casas.  We camped out on this bluff over looking a famous and gorgeous surfing cove on a clear night...perfect for a Baja sunset, bonfire and sunrise.

Shipwrecks, Baja California, December 2012
Yep, he got down on one knee!
Christmas Eve was a mad dash to the border, an inspection at the boarder, a need to stop for food and gas along the way kind of trip home.  We stopped in at Jimi's parents house to say Hi and drop off our pup, Ozzie, where we ended up lingering and celebrating...but to my surprise my family showed up! We toasted and were very merry.  One little surprise after another.

I have to hand it to Jimi, this was completely planned by him, and he exceeded my expectations, made it romantic and totally made it us! I couldn't have asked for a better weekend, and a better Christmas gift.  I thank him for that.

Part 4
...to be continued.

Much Love,

The Latest...

....from Mad Dream Design.

I have been working on these for some time for Jimi's sister and was finally able to finish and give them to her this weekend!  This weekend got me really excited about a certain direction I am going to be taking with my shop to get her started.  I am looking forward to sharing that with you soon!  These are a Sneak Peak:
The Arrow Drop Earrings by Maddie Dierkes of Mad Dream Design
All I have to say is... Simple. Elegant. Classic.

Another little Sneak Peak:

I have found some great inspiration and ideas for my blog from the No Brainer Blog, by Hayley Morgan, at the thetingtwig.com!  If you are a blogger, or are looking to start a blog, this is a great book (so far!), and I highly recommend taking a look at it.  It offers great insight on how to give your blog a cohesive brand or direction through your own voice.  You will start to see a few changes around here, starting in the new year, just because of this book!

Enjoy!

My Jewelry Designs

Original Handmade Jewelry by Maddie Dierkes
I am featuring some of my signature jewelry designs on here today, as I am in the beginning stages of setting up my design business that includes my jewelry design and my graphic design.  I am hoping by the end of the year I will have some jewelry workshop set up, and I will be able to sell my designs on Etsy! This is hard to focus on at times, since I already work full time as an in-house graphic designer for Aspen Medical Products and part time as a design consultant for another local business. All my graphic design, jewelry design and consulting will be under one business created by myself.  I will keep you posted here and eventually my blog will move to my website where you will be able to learn more!

My artwork

Elephant by Maddie Dierkes
I have accumulated a lot of art over the years with art school and as my art schooling comes to end with my BA in Studio Art at the end of the 2009 fall semester I will start to mold, create, educate myself on all things metal, jewelry and business to get my business and etsy store up an running in the next few years. My metal section is not very big but that is what I plan on building up in the next few years with more classes and the creation of an at home studio which will happen slowly but surely. Until I get my store up and running you can view my work on my facebook art album.

Here is the link and enjoy!
